![]() ![]() Chiropractic care has a long history. It was written about as far back as 2700 B.C. with references to spinal manipulation and maneuvering the lower extremities to ease low back pain. Even the famous Greek physician, Hippocrates published writings that discussed the importance of chiropractic care. He wrote, “…get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases.” The word “chiropractic” comes from Greek words meaning "done by hand,” which is what chiropractors do, using their hands they manipulate the body and spine to promote healing and wellness. Spinal manipulation gained recognition in the U.S. when Daniel David Palmer founded the Chiropractic profession in Davenport, Iowa in 1895. Palmer was a well-read, self-educated teacher and healer who kept abreast of the developments throughout the world regarding anatomy and physiology. What started out as a simple encounter with a deaf janitor named Harvey Lillard, whose spine misalignment Mr. Palmer corrected, he made an amazing discovery. This “readjustment” restored the janitor’s hearing. What Daniel David Palmer had inadvertently uncovered was a major source of nervous system interference. A loss of normal vertebral alignment was interfering with the body’s regulatory system, which caused what he called dis-ease (loss of ease). In 1897, he began the Palmer School of Chiropractic, which continues to be one of the most prominent chiropractic colleges in the nation today. ![]() |
